Television noise - Nathan
Every so often I hear a television that's been left on in another room. There's no show - usually the video source for the TV has been turned off or switched away - I just hear the high-pitched whine of the TV itself. I keep being surprised that more people don't seem to notice it. So, in the name of biased sampling, a poll.
Can you hear the sound a TV (CRT) makes?
If yes, does it bother you?

I have been able to hear the whine of some TVs, or other electronics, but not the particular TV that provoked this poll. Although I've tried multiple times. Very odd.
It bothers me sometimes, and sometimes not. I can't hear all of them any more either.
Our TV, when you press the power button, will turn the eletronics off, but not he tube. It only started doing this 2-3 years into it's life, because of a relay that failed. We got a foot switch for it and now greg, who can't hear the TV, asks me if it's on or not. I'm not sure if someone who had owned this TV who couldn't hear it would have detected that it wasn't turning completely off.

I don't know how to answer. Sometimes I hear, sometimes not. Sometimes it bothers me, sometimes not.
It almost never bothers me, because it's rarely the loudest noise in the room.
But sometimes I'll be sitting there reading listening to the whine of all our "off" appliances, and it bugs me that I'm never in COMPLETE silence.

Most of the time I can hear it, and it bothers me, but it's often not loud enough for me to think "oh yeah, it's the TV" (in part because our TV is very rarely on), so I just walk around being slightly bothered and don't figure out why.
just one more reason to drop a few $$ and get a plasma?
